Fall 1998
September 10-19: Human Rights
For 10 days, Ottawa was home to 60 selected authors from across Canada and around the world. We were proud to dedicate 1998's festivities to the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We firmly believe that "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and human rights". This important occasion underlined the importance of the literary community in supporting, and in many cases leading, the struggle for fundamental freedoms.
The image on our Festival poster was a young monk from Burma, a begging bowl in hand.
For more information on the Declaration please visit Amnesty International and for more information on freedom of speech, feel free to visit PEN Canada.
