William Deverell is a journalist, civil rights lawyer and activist, and author of prize-winning novels. His first, Needles, won the $50,000 Seal Award, and since then he has published numerous novels, including Kill All the Lawyers; The Dance of Shiva; Slander; Trial of Passion, winner of the Hammett Prize for literary excellence in crime writing in North America and Canada's Arthur Ellis Award for Best Crime Novel; and The Laughing Falcon. William Deverell also created the popular CBC Television series Street Legal and recreated its characters in a novel by that title. A Life on Trial (first published as Fatal Cruise) is his first and only work of non-fiction. He lives on Pender Island in British Columbia, and winters in Costa Rica.
