Robert Kaplan is a contributing editor of The Atlantic Monthly and the author of five books on travel and foreign affairs, including Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History. His articles of the eighties and early nineties were the first by an American writer to warn of the coming cataclysm in the Balkans. His last book, The Ends of the Earth, was a national bestseller, chosen by The New York Times as a Notable Book of the Year. His latest book is An Empire Wilderness. Kaplan, who has traveled in over seventy countries, lives in Massachusetts.
