George Saunders is the author of Civil War Land in Bad Decline, a finalist for the 1996 PEN/Hemingway Award and a New York Times Notable Book for that year. He was recently chosen by The New Yorker as one of the 20 best American fiction writers 40 and under. He teaches in the Creative Writing Program at Syracuse University. George's second collection of stories, Pastoralia, and a children's story, The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip, are to be published in the summer of 2000.
