This workshop will focus on the basis of good art criticism: looking. Participants will develop new, short pieces of writing based on observation of specific works of art for extended periods of time enabling close looking, immersive attention and patience to drive the writing process. Readings will include essays on art and criticism by Leo Steinberg, David Levi Strauss, Susan Sontag, and Richard W. Hill and art historian Jennifer L. Roberts on "The Power of Patience." Participants' writing will be workshopped collectively, ending with a discussion on what makes good criticism.
Articulation: Critical art writing workshop series is intended to offer participants the support, skills, and editorial assistance they need to establish or expand their critical art writing practice. The series aims to foster a community of critical art writers in the Ottawa/Gatineau region, by providing both emerging and experienced writers with the opportunity to connect with each other and learn from prominent members of the national art writing community. Each workshop is designed and led by a leading Canadian expert in the field of art. Participants learn hands-on from professionals who have an active writing practice, in a supportive day-long session. Look for more Articulation sessions throughout the year.
New to the 2014 program, OAG has forged a publication partnership with Apartment613 Community Initiatives. One piece of writing from each Articulation workshop, as identified through a juried selection process, will be published into a special featured section on apt613.ca
